According to our
books, Cape Mendocino Lighthouse is at Cape Mendocino near Ferndale.
We had no trouble finding the first-order Fresnel lens which now sits in the Humboldt County
Fairgrounds. Hoping to see the old site,
we drove the mountainous Mattole Rd for more than half an hour (following
Mike's direction).
We still could not see water and the brakes were getting very hot. In front of us was this
heavy fog bank which completely obscured the coastline. It was clear to us that
we would not be able to see anything even if we pressed on.
Returning to Ferndale, we talked with some local people, only to find that Shelter Cove,
where Cape Mendocino Lighthouse now resides, is 1.5 hours drive from Hwy 101 and Redwood Drive
(Redwood Drive is near Garberville and is about an hour's drive south of Ferndale).
For us, that meant we would have to do this on another trip.
Tips from Ferndale shopkeeper: Use low-gear when driving to/from the old Cape Mendocino site
as well as Shelter Cove.
