Originally built in 1858 to mark channels and obstacles in Matagorda Bay, this wooden hexagonal
screwpile lighthouse withstood many severe storms until 1942, when it was severely damaged in
a hurricane. In stead of repairing it, the Coast Guard sold it and it was
barged to shore. Today, the lighthouse sits alongside SR35, where it serves as
the Port Lavaca visitors center.
