Race Rock Lighthouse, NY
Race Rock is a series of submerged rocks at the west end of Fishers Island.   During the early 1800's, there was hardly a summer month that a vessel did not strike the rock reef with some times disastrous results.   The 45-foot Gothic Revival styled granite tower built at this location in 1879 was considered a benchmark in lighthouse engineering.   It also marked the end of masonry lighthouses on wave swept or water-bound sites.   Race Rock Light was automated in 1978 and it remains an active aid to navigation today.
