Warning of Middle Ground Shoal in Hampton Roads, this 52-foot caisson tower is located just east of the
Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge Tunnel near Newport News. It went into service in 1891,
automated in 1954, and was converted to solar power with a modern optic in 1988.
We tried to see the lighthouse from land at Newport News Industrial Park.
We could not see it from there. This also appears to be a rough neighborhood so
we would not advise anybody else to try.
