Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, NC
Cape Hatteras Lighthouse is easily the most recognizable lighthouse in the United States.   Its characteristic solitary tower with black-and-white spiral pattern over an octagonal base is celebrated in beach towels, lamp shades, mailbox stands and wind vents throughout the country.   At 208 feet (according to NPS), this is the tallest masonry lighthouse ever constructed in the United States.   Threatened by beach erosion, this 1870 structure was moved 2,900 feet in 23 days to the current location 1,500 feet from the seashore.   Thousands were present when it was re-lit on November 13, 1999.
